Vic Driver Savings Guide 2026

Petrol is up. Rego is biting. Servicing isn't getting any cheaper. The good news: between government rebates, fuel partnerships and concession card discounts, there's real money sitting on the table for Vic drivers in 2026. Here's the full menu.

* Note: AFS is not affiliated with the Government or any of the offers listed in this article.

1. The $186 rego rebate

If you own a registered passenger vehicle in Victoria, this one is close to a no brainer. The state government is offering a 20% rebate on light vehicle registration paid for the 2025 to 2026 period.

Up to $186 per vehicle. Max two vehicles per person.

Applications open Monday 1 June 2026 and close Friday 31 July 2026. The rebate is paid back into your nominated bank account once your application is approved.

Who can claim it

The rebate is open to Victorians who own light vehicles for personal use. That covers cars, utes and anything under 4.5 tonnes. You can claim back 20% of what you paid for your 2025 to 2026 registration on up to two vehicles in your name, regardless of how many vehicles are in your household.

How to apply

Applications are handled through the Service Victoria app or website. You'll need your registration details and bank account details on hand. Once submitted, the rebate is paid directly into your account.

TWO MONTH WINDOW

This is a one off rebate with a hard deadline of 31 July 2026. If you miss it, it's gone. We'll send out a reminder email closer to the date, but it's worth setting a calendar nudge for early June.

2. Where Vic drivers are saving on fuel

Petrol pump prices have been climbing. A regular driver running 50 litres a week can comfortably knock $200 to $400 a year off their fuel bill by combining one or two of the programs below. Please note: These savings may change from the time this was printed and information provided here should be taken as a guide only.

Each of these programs has its own eligibility and redemption rules. Most need an app, a card scan or a barcode shown at the counter. None of them apply to LPG. Two litre minimums and 150 litre maximums are common.

3. Concession card and seniors savings

Holding a Pension, Healthcare, Seniors or Veteran Card opens up another set of car cost savings that don't get the same airtime as fuel apps. These are worth knowing about because they apply to the bigger ticket items: tyres, servicing and parts.

United Petroleum seniors fuel discount

Participating United Petroleum outlets offer 4c per litre off for senior citizens in Victoria. Worth pinning down your nearest United station and adding it to the regular run.

Tyres and servicing

Plenty of tyre retailers and independent service centres offer pension or seniors discounts at the counter. They rarely advertise it on their website. The simple move: ask before you book. Common patterns we've seen:

  • 5 to 10% off labour at participating mechanics
  • Fixed dollar discounts on tyres or batteries
  • Free safety checks bundles with services

Some national chains run formal senior programs; others leave it to the franchisee. Either way, presenting your card upfront is the lowest effort move with the highest hit rate.

VIC SENIORS CARD

If you're 60 or over and not in full time work, the Victorian Seniors Card is free and unlocks discounts at hundreds of businesses including transport, dining and motoring. Apply through Seniors Online Victoria.

4. The bigger picture: keeping car costs in check

Discounts at the bowser are great, but the heaviest costs in running a car sit elsewhere. Here are three habits that make a far bigger dent in the annual total than any single saving above.

Service on schedule, not when something breaks

A logbook service done on time is almost always cheaper than the repair bill that follows from skipping one. Brake pads ignored become rotors. A small oil leak ignored becomes a top end rebuild. Booking the service at its due interval is the single most boring and most effective car saving habit there is.

Match the car to the actual use case

Big utes for short city commutes, performance cars used to drop kids at school, prestige sedans on freeway runs of 60km a day. The hidden cost of a mismatch shows up in fuel, tyres, servicing and depreciation. Worth a once a year sense check.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Victorian rego rebate window open?

Applications open Monday 1 June 2026 and close Friday 31 July 2026. The rebate is paid into your nominated bank account once approved.

Can l claim the rebate for two cars?

Yes. The rebate is capped at two light vehicles per person, regardless of how many vehicles are in your household. Both vehicles must be registered in your name.

What if l've already paid my rego for the year?

You're still eligible. The rebate is retrospective and applies to the registration payment you've already made for the 2025 to 2026 period.

Can l stack fuel discounts on the same fill up?

Sometimes. The most common stack is the AFL Live App's 4c per litre with a Coles supermarket docket at Shell Coles Express. Each program has its own rules though, and Ampol generally won't let you stack two Ampol partner discounts in the same transaction. Check the terms before you fill up.

Are these fuel discounts permanent?

Most of them are ongoing partnerships, but rates and participating sites can change. The AFL Live App offer is currently scheduled to run through October 2026. We'd suggest verifying the current rate with the provider before relying on a specific savings.

Does AFS finance refinancing of an existing car loan?

Yes. If you have an existing car loan elsewhere, refinancing through AFS may be an option depending on the loan amount, the vehicle and your circumstances. There's no early payout fee charged on AFS loans when you refinance an existing AFS loan. Have a chat with our team for a no obligation look at your situation.

Where can l find more cost of living help in Victoria?

The Victorian Government's main cost of living support page lives at vic.gov.au and covers energy bill assistance, school costs, transport concessions and more. Service Victoria handles the application side for most state level rebates.
